Jimmy Sabater reflects on the time he boarded an airplane when he notices a black liquid spewing out of one of its wings. After questioning a stewardess, her reply was, "Oh, don't worry sir, that always happens".....Jimmy's response? "Well in that case, miss, I'll have a drink...beezabeezoo!"
"El ultimo sonero porque no hay mas soneros despues que yo me muera porque todos los otros soneros son muertos". This quote is just one of the many witty lines that you can hear from this Afro-Caribbean sonero when he's "soneando" (improvising). Carlos Enrique Estremera Colon, affectionally known as Cano (he was born albino) IS truly one of the last soneros; and Salsa singers beware!...you would definitely brush up on your skills by just listening and watching "El Dueno del Soneo" (The owner of the soneo). In 1986 Cano won the Paoli award as Salsa Vocalist of the Year. Mr. Estremera started by singing religious hymns, at the behest of his god parents to study music. Professionally, he began in the music as a percussionist with a band that was formed in the Barrio Obrero section of Santurce, performing PLENAS and other folkloric music of Puerto Rico.
In 1978 Cano met Bobby Valentin and joined his band at the request of Bobby. Carlos Enrique Estremera Colon ("Cano") was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico on September 2, 1958. His first hit, "La Boda de Ella" was recorded with Valentin's group and won him acclaim in the category of popular music. Cano recorded six albums with Bobby Valentin and in 1984 left Bobby Valentin to form his own band.
